See furniture as a canvas. Chances are, by the time you see a piece of furniture in a thrift store, it's looking scratched, worn, or like the paint job went a little off the beaten path. That's okay! As long as it's sturdy and you don't mind refinishing or repainting, you can turn thrift store furniture into a signature piece.
Find dishes you love. Bowls, glasses, and plates are great things to pick up at a thrift store. You'll want to be sure you wash them before use, preferably in a dishwasher. It's probably a good idea to skip ceramics unless you know exactly what you're looking at—some older painted ceramic plates and cups have been known to contain high levels of toxins like lead.
Grab some artwork. You're not necessarily looking for a Monet hiding amidst framed prints—this is about finding something you like that complements your space. As MSN's guide points out, as well; even if the artwork isn't your taste, you might get a great bargain on the frame it comes in!
